"Bird Strikes" - the Perils of Heavy Snowfall

During the recent heavy snowfall we observed the Coopers Hawk hunting in our backyard.
The snowfall made his preferred diet of rodents very challenging to obtain.

This little Downy Woodpecker was almost lunch.
He out maneuvered the hawk, but not the window.
I kept a eye on him while Dan went to the rescue.
After escaping the hawk we didn't want the feral cats to get him.
Dan carefully picked him up to place him out of the cat's reach.
In just a few seconds he was alert and perching on his finger.

As Dan tried the place him on a high windowsill, The Downy decided he liked the perch he was on and began to climb Dan's arm.

He was finally placed on the Ivory Silk Lilac Tree and flew off 10 minutes later.

Protect your Songbirds by placing feeders in close proximity to shrubs, deadfall, or any closure they can escape to.
Keep your drapes closed or place Warning Webs on large expanses of glass to minimize window strikes.

And bear in mind the Cooper's Hawk must eat also.

Unwelcome Vistor

Yesterday when I opened up the shoppe, I noticed that the Koi tank netting had been disturbed overnight.
I later noticed what I thought was debris in it.
But what it was....was this huge BullFrog!

Meghan, my ever helpful and brave employee was willing to go frogging for it.
She was able to scoop it out all the while assuring the beast it was ok.
I believe it could have swallowed her whole.

Can you believe the size of this thing!

On a more serious note, we really don't want BullFrogs in our water gardens.
They have such a voracious appetite they will eat most anything.
Including your prized pet koi.

I much prefer our friendly, calm green frogs that live in the Mimulus Jungle here at Green Wellies.

Go Platinum this Summer

We just received a shipment of Premium Grade Platinum Butterfly Koi.

You have to see these to appreciate the sparkle they add to the pond.
The Platinum's are 4"-5" but as you know with the proper diet and pond conditions will grow rapidly.
Retail price $16.95.

We also have available 5"-6" Standard Grade Butterfly Koi, which will retail for $16.95 also.

Small 4"-5" Comets for a great price of $3.95!

As the days hopefully warm this next week, don't be surprised if you water garden becomes a little murky.
The solution.....more plants!

Make sure your pond has at least 50% of the surface covered with growing plant matter. As they plants grow they take up nutrients, essentially starving out algae.

Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce are a inexpensive, quick fix for those murky ponds.

The Mimulus and Water Forget me Nots are in full bloom in the Courtyard, stop by to see just how these bog plants work to soften the hardscape around your water garden.
