Orchids

We are very lucky in the great customers we have at the shoppe.

Jasmine travels the world on behalf of her organization Reach International, http://www.reach.org/. When she is going out of country for a long period and has orchids in bloom, she shares them with us so you can enjoy the blooms. I was thrilled to discover she dropped off 4 lovelies yesterday. Let me share them with you.

It is officially cold. Temperature readings of 1 degree as I drove to work, with wind chill at -12. We have had an abundance of snow in the last 36 hours. At least 14" at home and 8-10" at the shoppe. This was the view out the front door of Green Wellies yesterday morning at 1100am. Add another 6 inches of snow and you have a good idea of what the weather has been like.

Notice even "Hebe" our goddess of youth has enveloped herself in a mantle of insulating snow.

She is very scantily clad, so I am sure she is hoping for sunshine and warm weather. It is a bright and beautiful day today, lots of blue sky and sunshine, the perfect day to begin planning your spring gardens. Have a wonderful weekend!

Garden Catalogs

January is a odd time of year. The holidays are past and by this time forgotten. Shoveling snow is the main outdoor chore. The days are getting a tad bit longer, but the urge to hibernate is still strong. What could possibly exicite us.....

It is a wonderful way to spend a snowy, cold day. A cup of hot coffee, good music playing, and many garden catalogs to salivate over.

The Danger of Winter Warm Ups

I know a few of you are enjoying this freakish warm weather. Almost 60 yesterday, and just as warm this morning. I dislike it immensely, it is January, it is supposed to be cold and snowy. The Local Fruit Farmers are relying on the colder temps along with the short daylight hours, to produce the Fresh Fruit we all love. The Local Nurserymen & women are relying on the cold to take down pesky bugs that love to reside in Greenhouses. Bottom line: we need the cold and we need the snow cover. You want this warm and humid weather in January, head to Florida. I want a typical January in Michigan! Plus....who wants to see this.....

The Winter Garden

Hydrangeas love snow cover. Snow will insulate not only the root stock but the buds. Bigleaf Hydrangeas bloom on old wood, a insulation of snow is a must for plentiful blooms next year.
So if you are tempted to complain about all the snow, be thankful for what it does for your blooming deciduous shrubs.

Snow Days

We received 12-15" of Snow in the last couple of days, with the temperature falling into the teens last night. After 3 days of non stop snow, the skies cleared last night and we had a beautiful Sunrise this morning. This is a shot of the Greenhouse, working hard keeping all the Aquatic and Perennials ready for next Spring.

We hope you all had a fabulous Holiday Season!
We are Closed today to recover from all the fun, food and company, but will be back to regular business hours tomorrow the 2nd of January 2008.
At least 10" of snow fell in the last 24 hours with more expected, so we will be here shoveling/plowing all night so you can get in to shop tomorrow.
Don't forget with all the snow cover your backyard birds have a difficult time foraging for food.
Provide birdseed, suet, fresh water and brush the snow off the feeders. Then sit back with a good hot cup of coffee or tea and enjoy a favorite winter past time. Backyard Birdwatching.
